This week, Stephen Ibaraki has an exclusive interview with Professor Paulo Jorge Da Silva Bartolo.
Paulo Bartolo is Presidential's Chair in Additive Manufacturing, Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He is also Programme Director of the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) hub at NTU, Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering, visiting professor at several universities in Europe, Asia and America, and advisor of several funding agencies across the world including the European Research Council and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
He published over 650 publications (journal papers, book chapters and conference papers), edited 24 books and is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing (the leading journal in manufacturing and the first journal in this field achieving an impact factor higher than 20) and CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology, and integrates the Editorial Board of several other leading journal. He has been the PI of multiple projects funded by Singapore National Research Foundation, A*STAR, EPSRC (UK), Innovate UK, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Royal Society, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Portuguese Agency for Innovation, the European Commission, and Industry.
Paulo Bartolo is a pioneer in the fields of additive manufacturing and biofabrication with extensive work in the areas of bone, skin, cartilage and pancreatic tissue engineering. In these domains he has multiple patents and research collaborations with leading companies and hospital.
He was awarded with the title of Professor Honoris Causa from the Polytechnic University of Leiria (2024); the Kobayashi award (2024) for his contributions to the field of biomanufacturing; the Gold Medal of Merit of the Portuguese Communities from the Portuguese Government (2024) for his contributions to promote the culture, language and prestige of Portugal internationally; Medal of Merit from the city of Leiria (Portugal) for his national and international achievements (2022); Commendation and public recognition from the Portuguese Government, for the outstanding work as advisor of the Portuguese Government in the area of Research and Innovation; Commendation from the Polytechnic University of Leiria, for the outstanding work carried out at the institution (2014); and Council award Afonso Lopes Vieira in the area of Innovation, Leiria Town Council, Portugal (2009). Paulo Bartolo is counsellor of the Portuguese Diaspora Council founded with the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic and is listed among the top 2% Scientists in the World.
